Talk:Mapping

I'm thinking that the Testing section should actually be called Optimization or something like that. Testing is just a method used to optimize.

Also, somewhere in this article there needs to be an actual description of vis portals. Why? Because no where on www.iddevnet.com is there an actual description of vis portals or how one is created.

It's also important to rembember, vis portals do more than determine the visibility of map geometry.

They also define the sections of a map used with info_locations / info_locationseparators and they occlude sounds emitted from speakers.

Isn't a vis portal created by applying a special material to a single face? Perhaps vis portals should be included in a special material section that talks about clipping, ladders, aas.

I dunno. I just read a thread on d3w where the solution to a problem turned out to be removing a vis portal because it was occluding a sound and I figured I needed to document it somewhere. I just wasn't sure how to include it here in this article.

Visportals now described at visportal (as you already know, but I mention it for the benefit of anybody else who reads this talk page and starts to add redundant visportal info in this article).
I suggest that the Optimisation section is split off into a separate article to modularise things a bit - perhaps Map optimisation or similar?

Modularization

I think this page is getting too long and needs to be parted out to smaller pages, keeping this page more as an "index" of mapping stuff. For example the errors and optimizing tips should definitely have their own articles. -- iceheart 18:47, 9 Oct 2005 (W. Europe Daylight Time)

Split optimising and compilation errors

Optimising maps and Common Mapping Issues are now split. Some tidying up may still be necessary. OrbWeaver 12:58, 16 Oct 2005 (W. Europe Daylight Time)

Meshes versus brushes

I don't think that the sections on meshes versus brushes should have been moved into this article. They would have been better left in Modelling or even split off into a separate article (which could be linked to from both Mapping and Modelling). I suggest that this article is used as a portal with links to more technical topics, rather than having it overwhelmed with detailed information. OrbWeaver 22:34, 30 October 2005 (W. Agreed

This article shouldn't become to bloated, it's better to have a short little blurd and a "main article" link over it (check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formula_1 for examples, every section has "main article: something" and tagged on to it. --iceheart 22:40, 30 October 2005 (W.
