Talk:Startup parameters

I am not good at these parameters. Someone please add the common and important ones here. Also when done (and the Page name is fine), this should be added to the important articles on the game front-pages.

Isn't this article a bit redundant?

Aren't the startup parameters just console commands and CVars passed at the command line?

In that respect, it's kind of redundant to redefine what each one of these parameters does when it's already defined in the respective CVar and console command sections.

Perhaps, it's best just to explain that console commands and CVars can be passed on the command line in this article...

I agree. It would be better to have a paragraph in Console explaining that cvars can be passed on the command line using the +cvar format. OrbWeaver 13:43, 15 November 2005 (W. Europe Standard Time)

Most common ones

When this article was started, I thought it was a good idea to list the common ones since the entire list of commands and cvars is quite unwieldy, and most of them are not useful for startup purposes. Redundant information is only bad if it's contradictory. --iceheart 13:48, 15 November 2005 (W. Europe Standard Time)

The idea behind it

was to have something for novice users or users that don't want to know all about the console. For the "artists" that just want to start quake 4. A simple page that gives some info on the important and frequently used parameters when starting the game. Of course the information is also from the cvars/commands, the page frequently links to those after all. It's not a must have but I don't think it hurts anyone if that page exists.

Okay.

But aside from links, there is no mention of these startup parameters being console commands or CVars.

I think it's important to acknowledge that the parameters listed here are not the only possible command line parameters and that any console command or CVar can be passed on the command line.

defense!

Having created and written the article I feel the need to justify it's existence. Also rich, thou art wrongeth.

Doom 3 engine games allow you to start them with certain parameters in the command line to change their behavior. You can modify every single cvar and launch tools using these commands.
Using the +set command you can change every CVar (see Console for more info) of the game that you want when starting. Many example parameters you find below will be CVars that are modified using +set.

haha. teh win!

Restructuring?

I would change this page's structure to this:

  • Starting the game (making shortcuts or scripts)
    • Windows
    • Linux
  • Reason to use startup parameters (convenience, no need to use console, etc...)
  • Using console commands
    • (short text, just needs to state that you need to prefix any console command with "+" and that using +CVAR might not work)
    • +Set command (or how the +set command works different from /set)
  • Common uses
    • Starting the editor straight away
    • Launching the game in windowed mode
    • Heap of other usefull CVARS. (Console commands should be removed, just putting + in front of them makes them work. The reason the CVARS can stay is that there are readonly ones, which can only be changed by using +set)

Although it's flagged with "Attention" I was not ready to throw this 1 upside down without asking. --Kamikazee 15:12, 16 April 2006 (W. Europe Daylight Time)

Ok

Sounds good to me, except for "Console commands should be removed, just putting + in front of them makes them work", I still think the most important/common ones should be listed here. --iceheart 16:55, 16 April 2006 (W. Europe Daylight Time)

How does it look like?

Only the KDE and Gnome procedures are not documented. Mostly straightforward, but I don't know it by heart. Allso give some comments on the current state, if you like. --Kamikazee 19:24, 17 May 2006 (W. Europe Daylight Time)

Command Parameters

Some of the command parameters listed in this article don't work for me. editFX, editPlaybacks, editCVars, and a couple of others don't work, the console says they are unknown commands. I'm running version 1.3 also, so I don't know.

Page scope

While I can see the point of this page because certain CVars are write restricted when changed from the console, I believe it has far too much text. Some of it is redundant while other is out of scope. A description of what is a shortcut and how to create one belongs in a Beginner's Guide to Windows and the list of frequent commands/cvars should be removed as the Common Uses already provides enough examples. Personally I'd also remove the Linux stuff; if people use Linux they probably already know about scripting. --Mordenkainen 16:38, 11 October 2007 (CEST)
